Alajuelense Aims for Comeback Against Pumas in Concacaf Champions Cup

Alajuelense Aims for Comeback Against Pumas in Concacaf Champions Cup

Defender Alexis Gamboa highlights a strong defense as key to reversing a two-goal deficit.
Alexis Gamboa, a defender for Liga Deportiva Alajuelense, is confident heading into the second leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup round of 16 match against Pumas, scheduled for March 13, 2025, at the Estadio Morera Soto.

Gamboa emphasized that the team's focus should be on maintaining a solid defense to avoid conceding goals, saying the perfect match for Alajuelense would be one where they progress without allowing their opponents to score.

The team is trying to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the first leg, and Gamboa remarked on the importance of each player's individual qualities to achieve this.

"The perfect match is to advance in the series, not concede any goals, and be decisive in front of the goal.

We have an adverse result that we need to change, and we trust in each other's abilities to do it well," he stated.

Gamboa noted the challenges posed by the limited training time ahead of the match, highlighting that specific details caused issues in their previous encounter in Mexico.

Despite this, he remained positive about their prospects at home, where they will have the support of their fans.

“We are in our home ground, with our supporters, and we believe we can reverse the result,” he asserted.

In a related context, Club Sport Herediano faced a disappointing elimination from the same tournament, losing 4-1 to Los Angeles Galaxy in the decisive match.

After a promising start in the first leg, where they won 1-0, Herediano could not maintain their advantage.

The Galaxy scored two goals in the first half—one from Julián Aude at minute 30 and another from Miguel Berry at minute 38—significantly shifting the match's momentum.

After halftime, the Galaxy continued to dominate, with Gabriel Pec scoring the third goal, rendering Herediano's task almost impossible.

Despite a late goal from José de Jesús 'Tepa' González, which was not sufficient to turn the tide, Herediano was eliminated with an aggregate score of 4-2.

Following the defeat, González expressed deep disappointment, emphasizing the emotional toll the loss had on the team.

His teammate, Sergio Rodríguez, noted that while they fought hard, they fell short against a superior opponent and would aim to refocus on their domestic league ambitions.

Meanwhile, Alajuelense's head coach, Alexandre Guimaraes, reflected on improvements made over the past year, contrasting the current situation with a previous significant loss in the tournament.

He noted that a quick goal would be critical, as it could energize the team and fans alike.

Guimaraes assured that the team has trained for various game situations, including penalty scenarios, underscoring his confidence in the players' abilities to adapt as needed.

Both teams are now navigating disappointing moments and aiming for success in their upcoming matches, with Alajuelense preparing for a crucial home game while Herediano seeks to rebound in local competitions.
