Authorities Conduct Second Raid at Costa Rica Hotel in Miller Gardner Death Case

Investigators seize physical and digital evidence while examining possible negligence after carbon monoxide poisoning ruled cause of death
Costa Rican authorities carried out a second raid at the Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort in Manuel Antonio, where fourteen-year-old Miller Gardner, son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, died on March twenty-first.

The action, conducted by the Judicial Investigation Department, focused on gathering additional physical and digital evidence tied to the autopsy and overall investigation.

Miller Gardner was found unresponsive in his sleep during a family vacation; his death was later officially attributed to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Toxicology reports revealed a carboxyhemoglobin saturation of sixty-four percent in his blood.

Authorities also detected dangerously high carbon monoxide levels in his room, with measurements reaching up to six hundred parts per million.

A mechanical room adjacent to his hotel room has been identified as a likely source of contamination.

The first raid at the hotel took place on March twenty-eighth, during which measurements of hazardous atmospheres and the presence of carbon monoxide in the family’s room were confirmed.

The latest search, lasting about three hours, involved seizing management, maintenance, and accounting documents and interviewing hotel staff.

No charges have been filed, and no individuals have been formally identified as suspects.

The Gardners’ legal team has been kept informed and has cooperated closely with the prosecutors.

Authorities have stated that the investigation now aims to determine whether the case qualifies as involuntary manslaughter — whether there was a breach of duty of care that led to the teenager’s death.

The case remains open, with final toxicology results still pending.

The resort has expressed deep sorrow and affirmed full cooperation with the inquiry throughout.

Hotel management has disputed some details, including whether the high carbon monoxide levels were present in guest-occupied rooms, but has not provided conclusive evidence refuting the investigators’ findings.
