Blaise Metreweli Appointed as First Woman to Lead MI6

The UK government names Blaise Metreweli as the first female Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service, amid unprecedented national security challenges.
LONDON.

The United Kingdom government has appointed Blaise Metreweli as the first woman to serve as Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service, commonly known as MI6, marking a historic milestone in the agency's nearly 115-year history.

The announcement was made on Sunday by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, emphasizing the appointment's significance during a period characterized by unprecedented security threats facing the nation.

Metreweli, who will be the 18th director of MI6, is set to assume her new role in the autumn, succeeding the current head, Richard Moore.

Downing Street indicated that the responsibilities of MI6 have never been more vital, noting ongoing threats from foreign aggressors and sophisticated cyberattacks targeting critical public services.

In her capacity as head of MI6, Metreweli will be the face of the agency and reports directly to the Foreign Secretary.

Unlike the fictional representation by the character “M” in the James Bond series, the head of MI6 is known as “C.” Metreweli's appointment comes at a time when the agency's operational focus is crucial due to rising espionage activities and cyber warfare.

Previously, Metreweli served as the agency's Director General, referred to as “Q,” where she was responsible for overseeing technology and innovation initiatives within MI6.

She has had a longstanding career in intelligence, having joined MI6 in 1999 after studying anthropology at the University of Cambridge.

Her career has included notable positions within both MI6 and MI5, the United Kingdom's domestic intelligence service.

Metreweli's work primarily focused on operational roles in the Middle East and Europe, although further biographical details were not disclosed.

The appointment of Metreweli as Chief of MI6 follows the historic appointment of the first woman to lead MI5, Stella Rimington, who served from 1992 to 1996. Additionally, Eliza Manningham-Buller led MI5 from 2002 to 2007. Earlier in 2023, another British intelligence and security organization, GCHQ, appointed its first female director, Anne Keast Butler, further signaling a shift in leadership dynamics within the UK’s intelligence community.
