Costa Rica's Juan Santamaría International Airport has launched Central America's first formal protocol to prevent child sexual exploitation and trafficking, marking a major step in regional efforts to combat abuse.

Airport authorities, government agencies, and civil society groups collaborated to develop clear guidelines for identifying and reporting suspected cases, training staff to recognize warning signs, and ensuring swift coordination with law enforcement.

Officials say the new protocol sets a standard for the region while reinforcing Costa Rica’s commitment to protecting children.
