Costa Rica has intensified sanitary controls at its southern border in response to rising regional health concerns linked to methanol contamination.

The enhanced checkpoints aim to prevent the entry of illicit alcohol and protect travelers and residents from toxic exposure.

Officials emphasized that the move is part of a broader public health effort after several neighboring countries, including Mexico and Peru, reported methanol poisoning cases tied to unregulated products.
