Fifco and Café Britt announce collaboration to create ready-to-drink products following notification to regulatory authorities.
The Comisión para Promover la Competencia (Coprocom) in
Costa Rica has officially acknowledged the notification of a strategic alliance aimed at commercial purposes between two prominent local companies, Florida S.A. and Café Britt S.A. According to a statement released on June 3, the notification regarding this economic concentration was submitted to Coprocom on May 27, 2023.
The transaction entails a joint venture focused on the development and commercialization of a new product.
As detailed in the statement, the markets involved pertain to the production and sale of ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages.
Maria Pía Robles, Director of Corporate Affairs at FIFCO, noted that the company is currently assessing the potential partnership and stated, "We are awaiting the corresponding resolution.
At this stage, we cannot provide further details on the matter."
In response, Pablo Vargas, CEO of Grupo Arribada, which owns Café Britt, remarked that they are limited to sharing what was published by Coprocom and could not elaborate further at this time.
Founded in 1908, FIFCO has established a presence in multiple countries across Central America and the Caribbean, including Mexico, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic.
The company employs approximately 6,883 people, exports to 13 countries, and operates five production plants and 13 distribution centers, offering a portfolio of over 2,675 products.
Café Britt was established in 1985 and initially focused on coffee roasting and blending.
Its current product range includes over 150 items, such as coffees, chocolates, seeds, cookies, capsules, and cold beverages.
The brand is part of the Grupo Arribada, which also includes Morpho Travel Experience, Délika Gourmet, and Conceptos Gastronómicos.
Grupo Arribada operates in 13 countries and employs over 3,000 individuals, reporting combined revenues of $225 million in 2022.
Under Law No. 9736, the Ley de Fortalecimiento de las Autoridades de Competencia, the notification submitted to Coprocom initiates a 10-business-day period for third parties to provide pertinent information related to the transaction analysis.
This period is set to conclude on June 17, as per the statement.
Guillermo Rojas, a commissioner at Coprocom, previously explained that this process is instrumental in collecting key data to assess the transaction's impact on competition, aiming to prevent decisions that could adversely affect the market or consumers.
