Daniel Matamoros joins the Deportes Repretel team as significant changes are announced in the sports department and broadcasting set.
Deportes Repretel has announced a major update to its sports broadcasting as it renews its visual identity and expands its journalistic team.
The most notable addition is Daniel Matamoros, affectionately known as 'Gringo,' who has been brought on as a new sports journalist.
Matamoros, aged 25 and originally from San Pablo de Heredia, has been a familiar face at the station since completing his professional internship there in 2019. During this internship, he worked behind the scenes on the now-defunct ‘Conexión Fútbol,’ contributing to the production and formulation of questions for broadcasts.
After finishing his internship amid the
COVID-19 pandemic, Matamoros was rehired to help reestablish ‘Conexión Fútbol’ upon its revival.
He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating that transitioning from behind-the-scenes roles to appearing on camera has been a personal journey for him.
Despite initial reservations about being in front of the camera, Matamoros accepted an offer to debut in television reporting three months prior.
Additionally, Deportes Repretel's sports division is undergoing substantial changes in its broadcasting format and set design, set to be unveiled on June 7 during a match between the Costa Rican national team and the Bahamas, followed by another match against Trinidad and Tobago on June 19. The updates include a complete redesign of the channel’s logo, shifting from blue to red, which aligns more closely with the branding of Noticias Repretel.
Pablo Guzmán, the director of Deportes Repretel, detailed that the extensive rebranding has not occurred for over 11 years and aims to present audiences with a fresh experience for the World Cup qualifiers.
As part of the promotional strategy, the network will implement a lottery offering cash prizes and gaming consoles for viewers during national team games, culminating in a grand prize of a trip for two to the World Cup.
As these structural changes are announced, Deportes Repretel appears committed to enhance viewer engagement and evolve its sports broadcasting to meet contemporary standards.
This comes alongside excitement for the upcoming final match of the Clausura 2025 tournament between two arch-rivals, Liga Deportiva Alajuelense and Club Sport Herediano, set to take place on May 25, further intensifying the sports landscape in
Costa Rica.
