Disputed Penalty in Alajuelense vs. Herediano Draw Sparks Controversy

The recent match between Liga Deportiva Alajuelense and Club Sport Herediano ended in a 1-1 draw, igniting a debate over a potential penalty claim.
The highly anticipated match between Liga Deportiva Alajuelense and Club Sport Herediano concluded with a score of 1-1 on February 5, 2025. As the game neared its conclusion, a crucial moment occurred in the 92nd minute that has since generated significant discourse regarding a possible penalty for Herediano.

The incident involved players Celso Borges and Randy Vega, with Borges reportedly committing a fouling action in the penalty area of referee Washington Ortega.

The immediate response from the Herediano players and coaching staff was to call for a penalty kick.

In light of the controversy, soccer analyst Henry Bejarano provided commentary on the decision made by referee Bryan Cruz.

Bejarano stated, "They are asking for a penalty for Herediano at the 92nd minute; however, the referee acted correctly, as there was never a penalty for the florense team in that last action.

It is not a sanctionable foul for a penalty."

In the aftermath of the match, which saw Alajuelense managing to maintain their position at the top of the Clausura 2025 league standings, Herediano's coach, Alexander Vargas, expressed a degree of satisfaction with the draw but reiterated his desire to secure all three points.

Vargas stated that the team had been addressing inconsistencies in their performance, seeking to align their play style in hopes of improving results and meeting fan expectations for a championship.

In further developments within Costa Rican football, Real Estelí of Nicaragua claimed a notable victory against Mexican club Tigres, winning 1-0 in the CONCACAF Champions Cup on February 6, 2025. This victory emphasizes Real Estelí's increasing competitiveness in regional tournaments, as they demonstrated resilience against top-tier teams.

The match was marked by a decisive goal scored by Argentine forward Francisco Grahl in the 83rd minute.

Additionally, Alajuelense has made headlines by acquiring Tristan Demetrius, a promising 19-year-old Haitian player previously associated with Saprissa and most recently with KAA Gent in Belgium.

The announcement was confirmed by spokesperson Marco Vásquez, who noted Demetrius will join the U-21 team and continue training with the first team as opportunities allow.

In light of recent events, a pattern of player transfers between the league's clubs has emerged, with Jafet Soto, President of Herediano, alleging that players have been 'stolen' by Alajuelense and Saprissa due to inadequate facilities for youth leagues.

Soto stated plans are underway to reclaim training rights for multiple players.
