A 39-year-old man was found shot dead in Goicoechea, marking a rise in homicide rates as Costa Rica faces increasing violence in 2025.
On March 12, 2025, family members discovered the body of a man identified as Arguedas, 39, who had been shot multiple times in Ipís, Goicoechea.
The discovery was made in the morning, prompting family members to alert the Fuerza Pública and the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ), which received the notification around 8:20 a.m. This incident represents the 59th homicide in the San José province this year, showing a significant increase of 13 homicides compared to the same period in 2024.
As of March 2025,
Costa Rica has recorded a total of 181 homicides, which matches the number reported at the same point in 2024. This suggests a troubling trend in violence within the country.
Recent data from the OIJ highlights the escalating concern regarding public safety in
Costa Rica, particularly in urban areas.
Further incidents of violence were reported in Limón, where armed assailants committed a double homicide on the same day, adding to the growing urgency for effective measures to address the surge in violence affecting various communities across the nation.
The ongoing situation raises questions about security and law enforcement responses amidst this alarming rise in violent crime.
