Fire Breaks Out at Scrap Yard in Alajuela, Costa Rica

Emergency services respond to a blaze affecting 60 square meters with risk of spread.
On February 6, 2025, at 6:51 AM, a fire erupted in a scrap yard in San Antonio de Alajuela, Costa Rica.

The emergency unfolded at a site covering approximately one thousand square meters, diagonally opposite the Pavicen complex.

Fire Department officials reported that approximately 60 square meters were affected by the flames, which were at risk of spreading further.

In response to the situation, two firefighting units and one tanker unit were deployed to ensure a consistent water supply at the scene.

As of the latest reports, there have been no injuries recorded, and the causes of the fire have yet to be determined.

The fire emergency is an ongoing situation.

In a separate incident, early on the same day at 6:24 AM, a serious vehicle accident occurred in Limón, Costa Rica.

A male driver was critically injured in a collision involving a car and a motorcycle near the Mega Super.

Cruz Roja reported that upon arrival, emergency responders found the motorcyclist with multiple injuries.

The individual was stabilized at the scene before being transported to Tony Facio Hospital in Limón, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.

Additionally, law enforcement in San José announced a significant drug seizure during a raid on a convenience store known as a 'minisúper.' Authorities confiscated 20,000 doses of fentanyl, an opioid recognized for its high potency.

The operation was conducted based on intelligence received from the DEA in the United States, which indicated a point of sale for the illicit substance in the area of Tierra Dominicana.

The estimated street value of the seized fentanyl ranges from ₡50 million to ₡100 million, depending on its quality.

The police reported that the tablets, resembling lentil-sized pills in bright colors, were intended for a singular purchaser rather than for retail sale.

Two suspects, identified by their last names Núñez Marte and Quesada Quiel, have been detained in connection with this case, and legal actions are underway as the Special Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime prepares to seek precautionary measures against them.

The seized drugs will undergo forensic analysis to determine their purity.
