Argentinian referee leaves a mark on Costa Rican football, ushering in VAR and modern reforms before stepping down due to personal reasons.
In a surprising turn of events, Horacio Elizondo, the Argentinian leader of the Football Federation of
Costa Rica's (Fedefútbol) refereeing commission, has tendered his resignation once more, this time citing personal reasons and declaring it irrevocable.
Elizondo, who assumed his role in September 2023, has been instrumental in leading the country's push towards modernizing football officiating through the implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system and several technological advancements.
Fedefútbol confirmed Elizondo’s departure in a press release, highlighting the significant impact of his tenure on national refereeing standards.
His leadership saw the introduction of VAR, aiming to reduce controversial calls and improve match accuracy.
However, recent high-profile officiating controversies, particularly during the Apertura 2024 final, where a disputed penalty decision favored Alajuelense, have cast a shadow.
Elizondo first signaled his intention to resign in February 2024, hinting at disagreements over the management of refereeing within
Costa Rica's football sphere.
At that time, support from the referees' community and Fedefútbol, along with backing from the federation's president, Osael Maroto, encouraged him to remain in his position to facilitate further changes.
Under Elizondo’s guidance, Costa Rican referees saw advancements in training and technology adoption, contributing to an enhanced refereeing framework that Maroto praised in an interview in December 2024.
Maroto described Elizondo’s involvement as pivotal in elevating the national officiating infrastructure, stating the improvements had led to a decrease in public scrutiny over refereeing decisions.
Despite this, the pressures and contentious moments associated with the refereeing commission were apparent.
MARoto, acknowledging the situation, emphasized stability, noting that the referee department does not hinge on a single person’s presence.
The structural developments instituted by Elizondo, including the nurturing of a competent support team, ensure continuity.
Maroto is set to meet with Elizondo to finalize the terms of his departure, as Fedefútbol turns its attention to appointing a successor to lead the refereeing department during the imminent Clausura 2025 tournament, which marks the third campaign that would have seen Elizondo at the helm.
The transition is being closely monitored, given the vital role that refereeing holds in the integrity and fairness of the national sport.
In the interim, the arbitration department will maintain its operations, ensuring the professional standards upheld during Elizondo's tenure continue unabated.
The Costa Rican football fraternity, while absorbing the shock of his sudden exit, is preparing to navigate forward with the foundations laid under his stewardship.
