José Carlos Loaiza Assumes Role as Executive Director of Unafut Amid Major Changes

Loaiza to Lead Efforts At Improving Tournament Protocols Following Partnership with La Liga
On January 24, 2025, José Carlos Loaiza was appointed as the new Executive Director of the Costa Rican Football Union (Unafut), heralding a new phase marked by an agreement with Spain's La Liga to enhance the management of the national championship.

Loaiza, a Spanish national, will oversee the strategic and operational aspects of the league, focusing on professionalizing the competition and improving coordination among clubs.

Loaiza's appointment comes at a crucial time for Costa Rican football, with new responsibilities underscoring the need for meticulous planning and execution of league fixtures.

Notably, club presidents agreed to reinforce Loaiza's role, equipping him with the authority necessary to implement organizational improvements.

In his initial assessments since December, Loaiza identified planning inefficiencies, particularly concerning fixture schedules.

A priority under his leadership will be ensuring fixture dates are confirmed well in advance to prevent last-minute changes caused by unforeseen events, such as large festivals or logistical issues.

Alongside Loaiza, Fabio Masís will handle administrative tasks as President of the Executive Council, ensuring a balanced distribution of responsibilities within Unafut.

In this new partnership with La Liga, the objective remains clear: to establish a more structured and professional framework for the national sport, a sentiment echoed by Loaiza when stressing the importance of collaboration with local authorities to create well-defined event protocols.

In related developments within Costa Rican football, Cartaginés requested the suspension of their upcoming matches following the closure of their home stadium by the Ministry of Finance over past tax irregularities, delaying critical fixtures against Puntarenas FC and Santa Ana FC.

Meanwhile, Herediano's coach, Alexander Vargas, indicated confidence in his team's strength ahead of their match against Saprissa.

Vargas emphasized the importance of maintaining home advantage at Estadio Carlos Alvarado, seeking consistency from his players to ensure a positive reception from fans.

Additionally, Liga Deportiva Alajuelense addressed the personal hardship faced by player Fernando Piñar after the passing of his partner, receiving widespread condolences from the sporting community.

These ongoing developments within Unafut and across Costa Rican football underscore the dynamic shifts and challenges faced by teams, officials, and the sporting community in a landscape committed to greater professionalism and enhanced competitiveness.
