Kevin Cabezas Reflects on Injury and Departure from Alajuelense

The midfielder discusses his challenging recovery and future prospects following his exit from Liga Deportiva Alajuelense.
Kevin Cabezas, a prominent midfielder for Liga Deportiva Alajuelense, has spoken out about his difficult journey during his time with the club, particularly following a severe injury sustained during the Copa tournament.

On September 4, 2024, in a match against Escorpiones de Belén, Cabezas suffered a fractured tibia and fibula in a collision that left spectators stunned, including teammate Keyshawn Hurtado, who reportedly was visibly upset by the incident.

The injury occurred in the quarterfinals of the tournament and was immediately apparent, prompting concern from fans and medical staff alike.

In the aftermath of the injury, Cabezas experienced substantial pain, describing it as overwhelming, necessitating the use of strong painkillers, including morphine and fentanyl, which ultimately did not alleviate his suffering.

Following surgery and a rigorous rehabilitation process, which he described as both long and challenging due to nerve damage, Cabezas expressed optimism about returning to the field.

"I feel like new," he stated.

Although he must complete his recovery, he is now training with Sarchí in the Liga de Ascenso as he prepares for a return to competitive play.

Cabezas reflected on his time with Alajuelense, remarking that while his stint was fulfilling, it did not unfold as he had hoped, partially due to the competitive nature of the team and his unfortunate injury.

Despite this, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play for the club he has admired since childhood.

"I accomplished my dream, but it was not in the way I wanted," he noted, citing various factors that affected his experience.

The midfielder’s contract with Alajuelense is set to expire mid-year, which has led to his loan to Sarchí.

During his recovery, he found solace in the support provided by Alajuelense, acknowledging their assistance throughout his rehabilitation.

Although he had hoped for a more extended stay with the club, Cabezas stated that the decision for his departure was mutually agreed upon, taking into account the depth of talent on the team and the implications for his playing time.

Cabezas is now focused on regaining his competitive edge and contributing effectively to Sarchí, aiming for a swift return to the top division.

He has begun training regularly and aims to build his rhythm ahead of the competition.

As he moves forward in his career, Cabezas remains open to future opportunities within the sport, recognizing that adjustments in professional athlete careers are common.

His recent experiences have offered him a perspective on resilience, as he navigates professional life post-injury, and he prepares for the next phase of his career in Costa Rican football.
