PLN Backs Rodrigo Arias for Re-election as Legislative Assembly President

PLN Backs Rodrigo Arias for Re-election as Legislative Assembly President

The Partido Liberación Nacional unanimously supports Rodrigo Arias Sánchez to extend his presidency of the Assembly for another year.
The Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) has announced its support for Rodrigo Arias Sánchez to seek re-election as president of the Asamblea Legislativa on May 1st.

Arias has served as president of the Assembly for the past three years.

The decision to back Arias for an additional year in leadership was reached unanimously in a meeting with the PLN’s legislative deputies and the party’s presidential candidate, Álvaro Ramos.

Arias expressed that it is "a great honor" to be designated as the candidate again, citing challenges posed by a government and president he claims are pushing the limits of legality in the country.

He indicated that he has had discussions with various political groups and is optimistic about securing the necessary votes for re-election on May 1st.

Earlier in March, Arias met with the Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC), which has been a significant ally in his continued leadership in the Congress during the current legislative period.

Arias had previously stated that he would wait until after the PLN selected its candidate for the 2026 elections to determine the potential support from his party’s representatives.

Regarding the accusations made by the Prosecutor’s Office against President Rodrigo Chaves, Arias defended the role of the Public Ministry, asserting that it is fulfilling its duty.

Álvaro Ramos characterized himself as a "witness" to the PLN faction’s decision, commenting on the prosecutor's charges against the president.

Ramos remarked that the general prosecutor’s accusations reflect an executive branch that has crossed unacceptable lines.

He emphasized that the faction would work diligently to ensure that all public officials are held accountable.

Deputy Óscar Izquierdo noted that Ramos participated as an observer in the meeting and did not influence the decisions made.

He highlighted that Arias’s experience in leading the Assembly was a significant factor in their choice to support him, stating, "Don Rodrigo is the one with the necessary conditions to face whatever needs to be faced in the Assembly."

Izquierdo ultimately chose not to pursue candidacy for the congressional presidency.

During the meeting held at the Crowne Plaza hotel, the PLN also confirmed that deputies Izquierdo and Alejandra Larios will continue in their roles as head and deputy head of the PLN faction.

At 41 years old, Álvaro Ramos is the PLN's new candidate for the national elections in 2026. He received 63,209 out of 81,039 valid votes cast during the party's internal convention on April 6, as reported in official figures released on the morning of April 7.
