Heavy rains lead to infrastructure damage and flooding in multiple cantons of Costa Rica.
On June 4, 2025, a significant sinkhole emerged in a central street of Tibás, approximately 100 meters east of the restaurant Rincón Poblano, attributed to heavy rainfall experienced on that day.
By 8 p.m., the affected road was closed to traffic, with plastic barriers placed around the sinkhole for public safety.
This incident is part of a broader series of damages reported in the region following severe weather conditions.
In the Dent neighborhood, a river overflowed, leading to flooding in several homes, damaging appliances and furniture.
Further complications were noted on the Circunvalación highway in Hatillo, where roadway closures occurred due to flooding.
Additionally, in San Pedro de Montes de Oca, the entrance to the Faculty of Law at the University of
Costa Rica faced renewed flooding due to rising waters from the Los Negritos creek.
The National Emergency Commission reported a total of 55 incidents stemming from the heavy rainfall affecting 11 cantons, with the majority of incidents reported in Desamparados, Alajuela, and Montes de Oca.
