Uzbekistan Secures Historic Qualification for 2026 World Cup

After a goalless draw against the UAE, Uzbekistan has qualified for its first-ever World Cup, joining seven other nations.
Uzbekistan has achieved a historic milestone by securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

This qualification was confirmed following a scoreless draw against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Thursday in Abu Dhabi.

As an independent nation since gaining sovereignty in 1991 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Uzbekistan's football team, known as the ‘White Wolves’, will participate in the World Cup for the first time.

This opportunity arises due to the tournament's expansion from 32 to 48 teams.

In the Asian qualifiers, Uzbekistan secured the second position in Group A, finishing behind Iran, which has also qualified.

The Uzbek team has amassed a four-point lead over the UAE with one match remaining, ensuring their spot in the World Cup.

Uzbekistan is the eighth nation to qualify for the tournament, joining the three host countries and other qualifiers such as Japan, New Zealand, Iran, and Argentina.

The team's success has been bolstered by key players, including Abdukodir Khusanov, a defender for Manchester City, and Eldor Shomurodov, the team's captain and striker for AS Roma.

The nation has also demonstrated a solid player development system, evidenced by its victory in the 2023 AFC U-20 Asian Cup.

A total of eight direct qualification spots and one playoff position are allocated to Asian teams for the 2026 World Cup, with three spots already filled by the aforementioned nations.

In a related sporting event, Cristiano Ronaldo, the captain of the Portuguese national team, further consolidated his position as one of football's all-time greats by scoring his 938th official goal in a 2-1 victory against Germany.

This performance propelled Portugal into the UEFA Nations League final, where they will face either Spain or France.

At 40 years old, Ronaldo continues to add to his impressive tally, having already surpassed 20 goals in 2025. He aims to reach the significant milestone of 1,000 official goals, a target he discusses during engagements with football analysts.

Ronaldo's goal against Germany was a product of teamwork, facilitated by players Nuno Mendes and Bruno Fernandes, allowing him to convert a straightforward opportunity into an important goal for his team.

Portugal's final match in the UEFA Nations League is scheduled for June 8, 2025. As Ronaldo remains a free agent following the conclusion of his contract with Al-Nassr, multiple clubs have expressed interest in securing his services, especially as he prepares for the upcoming Club World Cup.
