Venezuela Awards Posthumous Nationality to Singer Rubby Pérez Amid Tragedy

Rubby Pérez, a celebrated musician, died in a nightclub collapse that claimed 236 lives; Venezuela honors his legacy.
Venezuela has posthumously awarded nationality to singer Rubby Pérez, who passed away in April during the catastrophic collapse of a nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, while he was performing at a concert.

The roof collapse at Jet Set nightclub resulted in the deaths of 236 individuals.

Two owners of the establishment are currently facing charges of involuntary manslaughter related to the incident.

Rubby Pérez was on stage at the time of the disaster.

Known for hits such as "Volveré," "Enamorado de Ella," and "Buscamos Tus Besos," Pérez had entertained Dominicans and millions across the Caribbean for over four decades.

His influence extended deeply into both Dominican Republic and Venezuela, where he was considered an idol.

During his funeral, his casket was draped with both Venezuelan and Dominican flags.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro presented the singer's identity card and a posthumous award to Zulinka Pérez, the artist's daughter, during an official ceremony in Caracas, which was reported by state media.

Zulinka recounted her father's affection for Venezuela, stating, "He would say, 'Mom, you are going to love Venezuela, they are going to love you as they loved me.

That is my second homeland.'" She asserted that obtaining Venezuelan nationality was a long-held dream of her father's.

In response to the tragedy, a Dominican court has postponed until June 18 a hearing that will review the legal proceedings against brothers Antonio and Maribel Espaillat, the club's owners, who were arrested on June 12. The prosecution has requested preventive detention for Antonio and house arrest for Maribel.

In early June, the musician's family called for justice for Rubby Pérez and the other victims of the disaster.

Families of the deceased have filed more than 80 civil lawsuits against the Espaillat family, a prominent Dominican family with interests in media and restaurants.

Zulinka Pérez has also claimed that emergency exits at the Jet Set nightclub were closed during the incident.
