Washington Ortega Embraces Pressure at Alajuelense

The Uruguayan goalkeeper relishes the challenge of playing for a top-tier team as he joins Costa Rica's Liga Deportiva Alajuelense.
In the high-stakes world of professional football, Washington Ortega, the new goalkeeper for Costa Rica’s Liga Deportiva Alajuelense, is invigorated by the prospect of competing under pressure.

The 33-year-old Uruguayan, who recently joined the club, expressed his enthusiasm and commitment to helping the team achieve its goals.

Ortega, who arrived in Costa Rica over the weekend, has already donned his new team’s colors and started familiarizing himself with the club's rich history and achievements.

"I’m coming to a great club," Ortega stated through Alajuelense’s communication office.

"The expectations are to win champions and to fight for the 31st title.

That's our goal, and we must achieve it because that's what the club demands." Ortega's journey to Alajuelense was influenced by several factors.

After a successful stint in Colombia with La Equidad, where he matured significantly as a player, Ortega became motivated by the positive interest from Alajuelense and the leadership of Alexandre Guimaraes, a renowned figure whom he has faced in Colombia but never worked with directly until now.

"Guimaraes is a winner, well-known globally, and encountering him previously in Colombia played a part in my decision," Ortega mentioned.

Reflecting on his time with La Equidad in Colombia, Ortega acknowledges the critical development he experienced.

Transitioning from the ranks of Uruguay’s second division, where he helped his team secure a championship, to the competitive stage of Colombian football, Ortega became a more seasoned player, learning to adapt to different challenges, such as playing at high altitudes, dietary adjustments, and handling more skilled opponents.

These experiences allowed him to build a name for himself in the football community, garnering attention from numerous clubs across the region.

"The past three years at La Equidad were pivotal," Ortega remarked, emphasizing his growth in understanding the dynamics of the game and his professional responsibilities.

Ortega also admits to being in possibly the best shape of his career, ready to tackle the demands and expectations at Alajuelense.

The pressure to perform is something he embraces, viewing it as a critical step in advancing his career further.

To the passionate fan base of Alajuelense, Ortega sends his gratitude and hope for collective success.

"I want to thank the fans for their support and assure them I’m prepared to deliver on the field," he affirmed.

"I’m dedicated to training hard and embracing the sacrifices needed to achieve great things with the team." The journey to professional success hasn’t been without its hardships for Ortega.

He candidly recalls challenging times back in Uruguay, where financial strains saw him juggling additional jobs just to make ends meet, particularly recalling his father’s unwavering support during those testing times.

"My father was a key figure in my life," Ortega emotionally revealed, citing his late father’s influence as instrumental in reaching his current professional stature.

With the lessons of perseverance and commitment at his core, Washington Ortega sets his sights on leaving a significant mark at Liga Deportiva Alajuelense.
