Alajuelense Reschedules Classic Match Against Saprissa Due to Security Concerns

Alajuelense Reschedules Classic Match Against Saprissa Due to Security Concerns

The iconic Costa Rican football match will now take place on April 21, a Monday, following a request from the police.
The Liga Deportiva Alajuelense has officially rescheduled its highly anticipated classic match against Deportivo Saprissa to Monday, April 21, 2025. This decision has raised questions among fans of both teams, known as manudos and morados, regarding the unusual timing of the match.

Marco Vázquez, a spokesperson for Alajuelense, explained that the Fuerza Pública, Costa Rica's national police force, requested the change in schedule.

The primary reason cited was related to security; the police indicated that they would not have sufficient personnel available that weekend due to a significant influx of vacationers returning from Easter holiday travels.

Originally, the match was slated for Saturday, April 19, at 8 p.m., but the adjustment was made to accommodate law enforcement's capacity to ensure the safety of players and fans during this crucial fixture.

The kickoff time remains unchanged despite the date change.

This incident is not the first time the Fuerza Pública has intervened in the scheduling of an important match.

Last season, Alajuelense faced a similar situation when they were required to alter the date of a match against Herediano, which was initially set for September 14, coinciding with Costa Rica’s independence celebrations.

Further instances have included a request to San Carlos, the home team in a previous semifinal match against Saprissa, to move their match date from December 7 to December 6 due to a coinciding festive event in Ciudad Quesada.

While it is not mandatory for teams to comply with police recommendations, disregarding such requests could necessitate the hiring of additional private security, which can be significantly more costly.

In light of these considerations, Alajuelense chose to adhere to the police directive and shift the match to Monday night.

The upcoming classic is set to be a monumental event, as it falls within the context of the 19th round of the Clausura 2025 tournament, carrying substantial implications for both teams.

Alajuelense is currently in pursuit of the top spot in the league, while Saprissa is focused on securing a playoff position.

Anticipation is building among fans, indicating a typical high level of attendance and engagement for this storied rivalry.
