Brock Lesnar has announced his retirement from professional wrestling and combat sports, saying his SummerSlam defeat by Oba Femi in Minneapolis was the final match of a career that took him from college wrestling to the top of WWE and the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

The 49-year-old made the announcement on The Pat McAfee Show after losing to Femi in a Hell in a Cell match at SummerSlam on August 1. "I'm here today to let the world know that I am retired," Lesnar said.

The result was framed as a passing of the torch to Femi, one of WWE's rising stars, and Lesnar said he now intended to devote more time to his family.

Retirement declarations in professional wrestling have often proved temporary, and Lesnar himself left and returned to WWE more than once.

This time, however, he said the decision applied not only to wrestling but to competition more broadly.

Reports have nevertheless suggested that WWE could seek to involve him in future non-wrestling appearances, including a possible Hall of Fame role.

Lesnar's standing rests on an athletic résumé that was exceptional even before the carefully scripted world of professional wrestling amplified it.

Raised on a farm near Webster, South Dakota, he won the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division One heavyweight wrestling championship in 2000 and finished his college career with 106 victories and five defeats.

WWE recruited him that year and introduced him to television audiences in March 2002 alongside Paul Heyman, who called him "The Next Big Thing." Lesnar won the WWE Championship from Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson at SummerSlam only 126 days after his televised debut, becoming the company's youngest world champion at the time, aged 25.

His first WWE run ended in 2004 after the demanding travel schedule and physical strain took their toll.

He then attempted to join the Minnesota Vikings despite not having played organised American football since high school.

He reached the team's training camp but did not make the final roster.

The more consequential detour came in mixed martial arts.

Lesnar lost his UFC debut to Frank Mir in 2008, then beat Randy Couture by technical knockout in only his fourth professional bout to win the UFC heavyweight championship.

He later defeated Mir in their rematch at UFC 100, one of the sport's biggest pay-per-view events at the time.

His mixed-martial-arts career was disrupted by diverticulitis, a serious intestinal illness that caused major weight loss and ultimately required surgery.

Lesnar returned to competition but lost the UFC title to Cain Velasquez and was stopped by Alistair Overeem.

His final mixed-martial-arts record was five victories, three defeats and one no contest.

That no contest arose from his 2016 bout with Mark Hunt at UFC 200.

Lesnar failed two drug tests for a prohibited substance, and the Nevada State Athletic Commission overturned his victory, imposed a one-year suspension and fined him $250,000.

The United States Anti-Doping Agency also imposed a one-year sanction.

Lesnar said he had not knowingly taken a banned substance.

When he returned to WWE in 2012, the company presented him not simply as a dominant wrestling character but as a former UFC champion whose physical legitimacy required little embellishment.

His partnership with Heyman became central to that presentation.

Lesnar went on to defeat The Undertaker at WrestleMania 30 in 2014, ending the wrestler's 21-match undefeated streak at WWE's biggest annual event, and later overwhelmed John Cena at SummerSlam in a match remembered for its repeated German suplexes.

The final phase of Lesnar's career has also been shadowed by allegations connected to Janel Grant's lawsuit against former WWE executive Vince McMahon and WWE.

Grant alleged that McMahon used her as a sexual bargaining chip during negotiations involving Lesnar, gave him her telephone number and directed her to create sexual content for him.

Lesnar was not a defendant in the case, has not been charged with wrongdoing and has not publicly responded to the allegations.

The federal case against McMahon and WWE was dismissed from court in July and moved to confidential arbitration, where the underlying claims and defences can continue.

McMahon has denied Grant's allegations.

The legal shift does not amount to a finding on the merits of the accusations.

Lesnar leaves WWE with multiple world championships and a singular place in its history: a performer whose credibility came from proven success beyond the ring as well as from the aura created inside it.

His final match has now elevated Oba Femi as the successor WWE chose to beat him in Minneapolis.
