Convict Recaptured After Brief Escape from La Reforma Prison Complex

Adrián Arrieta Pizarro, who escaped from Alajuela's Gerardo Rodríguez Prison, was recaptured within hours.
On January 8, 2025, Costa Rican authorities, including the Penitentiary Police and the Public Force, conducted an extensive search operation in Alajuela following the escape of a convict from the Gerardo Rodríguez Prison.

The escapee, identified as Adrián Arrieta Pizarro, was apprehended shortly after midday.

Details of the recapture location have not been disclosed.

The Ministry of Justice and Peace (MJP) reported that Arrieta Pizarro had pending legal proceedings for simple theft, linked to an incident in Hatillo in 2023.

His escape was discovered on Wednesday morning, prompting an immediate response from law enforcement agencies.

Law enforcement released images of Arrieta Pizarro, highlighting distinctive tattoos to aid identification efforts.

Among these, the name "Tano" is tattooed on his right shoulder, with other visible tattoos on his left chest and back.

The swift recapture of Arrieta Pizarro underlines the coordination between various divisions of Costa Rican law enforcement.

However, it also raises questions about security protocols at the Gerardo Rodríguez Prison, part of the La Reforma complex.

This incident brings attention to broader discussions about prison security and management not only within Costa Rica but potentially applicable to prison systems globally facing similar challenges.

The coverage of this event was led by Yiren Altamirano Bolaños, head of judicial and crime reporting at La Nación since September 2023.

Altamirano is a journalism graduate from Universidad Federada San Judas Tadeo and has been involved in professional communication since 2021.
