Binding rule covers any workplace with at least one breastfeeding employee, effective July 2025
Costa Rica has implemented a new workplace regulation that mandates all employers, both public and private, to provide suitable breastfeeding facilities if at least one employee is lactating.
Effective July 2, 2025, the law requires facilities to meet standards for privacy, ventilation, refrigeration, and ergonomic support.
Shared-use spaces in malls and office complexes are permitted, but breastfeeding rooms must not be placed in restrooms or storage areas.
Employers have 12 months to comply and must obtain approval from the Ministry of Labor to avoid sanctions.
