FIFA President Comments on León's Participation in Club World Cup Amid Ongoing Legal Dispute

Gianni Infantino addresses the future of León de México in the FIFA Club World Cup as a legal case involving Alajuelense unfolds.
Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, reaffirmed the organization's stance regarding León de México's participation in the upcoming Club World Cup.

Speaking to the media on April 8, 2025, Infantino indicated that FIFA is awaiting a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) concerning a legal challenge brought forth by the Costa Rican football club Alajuelense.

This case centers on allegations of ownership conflicts pertaining to the multi-ownership rules governing the tournament.

In response to questions about fairness regarding León's exclusion following their qualification on the field, Infantino expressed his appreciation for Mexican football while maintaining a neutral position on the specific case.

He highlighted FIFA's dedication to transparency and adherence to regulations.

"Football is life, and we know how much is loved in Mexico.

We are fans of Mexico, of the national team, and everything that showcases the extraordinary passion in the country," he stated.

The FIFA Appeals Committee had previously ruled to exclude León from the Club World Cup, citing violations of ownership regulations.

Infantino confirmed that the FIFA will respect the decision made by TAS, which is scheduled to hear arguments on May 23 regarding the demands made by Alajuelense and the potential implications for León and Pachuca.

According to Infantino, the final ruling will apply FIFA's rules and regulations.

The Club World Cup is significant as it pits various club champions from around the globe against one another.

León’s situation remains fluid as fans and stakeholders remain invested in the developments of the case leading up to the TAS decision.
