José Giacone: Confident in Saprissa's Enhanced Competitiveness This Season

Saprissa's head coach José Giacone remains optimistic about securing the team's 41st title as they prepare for a challenging season.
As the anticipations for the upcoming football season crescendo, José Giacone, the head coach of Deportivo Saprissa, has expressed confidence in his team's improved performance following strategic enhancements.

Speaking at the Unafut Media Day, Giacone revealed his aspirations for securing the club's 41st championship title, despite acknowledging the challenges posed by strengthened rival teams.

Reflecting on the team's current dynamics, Giacone remarked, 'I see the team quite well, better than the previous tournament,' when addressing a journalist from La Nación.

His optimism is bolstered by critical improvements in the team, notably in physical preparation.

'With the additions we have made, I believe we have a very competitive team.

We've addressed some important issues, like the physical aspect, which affected us with muscular injuries.

We think we can have more stability in that regard now,' he explained.

Beyond physical readiness, Giacone is encouraged by the impressive form displayed by certain players during training sessions.

'Some players we hadn't accounted for have shown very good performance in recent weeks.

I believe the team will find a good level.

Winning the championship is always difficult, but that is what we work and prepare for.

Our hope and efforts are focused on that,' Giacone stated.

Notably, the situation of Gino Vivi remains unresolved.

Giacone is keen to have Vivi join the roster, though they are still awaiting a response from the Galaxy.

'At the management level, Sergio [Gila] is handling it.

I don't know for how long, but I want to count on him,' he commented.

The off-season has seen various movements across the league, which Giacone believes will amplify the league's competitiveness.

'Teams have made their movements.

Some have reinforced well, others haven't had as many additions, but all tournaments are competitive.

Generally, the second tournament is more competitive than the first.

Now, as this one begins, it will be different,' he elaborated.

Looking towards international competition, Giacone underlined the importance of their upcoming CONCACAF participation in February against MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps.

'It's a very important tournament for our aspirations, and the opponent, Vancouver, is an MLS team with typical physical strength and much order.

But there's still time, and we will devote more time to preparing for that match,' said Giacone.

During the media event, amidst his engagements with the press, Giacone took time to interact with fans, underlining his connection with the community by signing autographs, including for young fan Ariel Durán.

This interaction embodies the spirit of anticipation and camaraderie that defines Saprissa's approach to the forthcoming season.
