Man Arrested for Threatening Costa Rican Legislators and General Comptroller

Judicial authorities confirm the temporary detention of a suspect who allegedly made death threats against two lawmakers and a high-ranking official.
The Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) has confirmed the temporary detention of a man identified as Mora Chaves, who allegedly issued death threats in October against two Costa Rican legislators, Sofía Guillén of the Frente Amplio (FA) party and Andrea Álvarez of the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN).

In addition to threatening the lawmakers, the suspect also directed threats towards the General Comptroller of the Republic, Marta Acosta.

Law enforcement officials reported that the arrest took place in Liberia, Guanacaste, approximately three weeks prior to the announcement.

The OIJ has stated that the ongoing investigation is part of case number 24-000077-0033-PE, focusing on allegations of threats against public officials.

On October 14, Álvarez and Guillén reported receiving death threats through their email accounts.

Álvarez indicated that the threats also encompassed fellow PLN members.

The emails contained menacing content, citing a purported plan named "operation Juanito Mora".

The sender stated, "We are going to attack the Legislative Assembly with AR-15 rifles and will kill you in your office (...).

We will storm the Congress chamber, and those who tomorrow will be hostages are to be shot at, we are 50 strong."

The threats are currently under investigation by the OIJ’s Section of Various Crimes.

Furthermore, the prosecutor's office has mandated that the suspect abide by a restraining order, prohibiting him from approaching within 200 meters of the Legislative Assembly or the Office of the General Comptroller.

The order also prohibits him from contacting any of the three targeted officials, including Guillén, Álvarez, and Acosta, through any means.
