Real Madrid Advances to Champions League Quarter-Finals After Penalty Shootout Triumph
The Spanish giants eliminate Atletico Madrid following a tense penalty shootout, while Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund also secure berths in the quarter-finals.
Real Madrid qualified for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday at the Metropolitano Stadium, defeating Atletico Madrid in a penalty shootout (4-2) after a goalless draw in regular time and extra time, leveling the tie at 2-2 on aggregate.
The match began dramatically with a powerful shot from Conor Gallagher just 30 seconds in, which was not reached by Real Madrid's goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, bringing the aggregate score to parity after Real Madrid's 2-1 victory in the first leg.
Real Madrid had a significant opportunity to equalize during the match when they were awarded a penalty in the 65th minute for a foul on Kylian Mbappé.
However, Vinicius Jr. missed the penalty attempt in the 68th minute, sending the ball wide.
During the decisive penalty shootout, referee decisions played a crucial role, as a penalty scored by Julian Alvarez for Atletico was overturned due to the Argentine slipping and touching the ball twice.
Additionally, Marcos Llorente hit the crossbar with his attempt.
The shootout concluded with Jan Oblak, Atletico's goalkeeper, getting a touch on a shot from Antonio Rudiger, but the ball ultimately crossed the line, securing Real Madrid's advancement.
In the upcoming quarter-finals, Real Madrid will face Arsenal, who eliminated PSV Eindhoven with a combined score of 7-1 after drawing 2-2 in the second leg at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal’s performance allowed coach Mikel Arteta to rotate his squad, resting key players and giving chances to less regulars such as Raheem Sterling, with only four starters from the first leg appearing in the return match.
In another notable match, Borussia Dortmund, the defending runners-up, defeated Lille 2-1 in an away fixture to advance to the quarter-finals against FC Barcelona, who had secured their spot on Tuesday.
Dortmund had drawn 1-1 in the first leg at home but took an early lead in the decisive match with a goal from Canadian striker Jonathan David in the fifth minute.
They later overturned the deficit with a penalty from Emre Can in the 54th minute and a cross-shot goal from Maximilian Beier in the 65th minute.
Dortmund's persistence was rewarded in a match where they created several clear-cut chances, including a triple attempt in the 20th minute thwarted by the reflexes of Lille’s goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, and a shot from Karim Adeyemi that struck the crossbar in the 63rd minute.
Additionally, Aston Villa capped off their quarter-final qualification with a convincing 3-0 victory over Club Brugge, featuring two goals from Marco Asensio.
The English side, having already established a favorable position with a 3-1 victory in the first leg, took full advantage of Brugge playing with ten men for most of the return match after Kyriane Sabbe's red card in the 16th minute.
The second half saw goals from Asensio in the 50th and 61st minutes, along with a strike from Ian Maatsen in the 57th minute, further solidifying Aston Villa's dominance.
