Rescue Operation Turns into Arrest Following Incident at Virilla River

A 31-year-old man was detained after being rescued from a ravine, suspected of attempted theft nearby.
On June 3, 2025, emergency services responded to a distress call from a man yelling for help at the bottom of a ravine near the Virilla River, prompting a swift rescue operation by the national emergency service, Cruz Roja.

The individual, identified as 31-year-old Hidalgo, was rescued without suffering any serious injuries and did not require hospitalization, as confirmed by Cristian Quesada, the regional operational coordinator for Cruz Roja.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. local time, prompting the mobilization of ten Cruz Roja personnel, who successfully accessed and retrieved Hidalgo from the ravine.

Initial reports suggested that Hidalgo might have sustained serious injuries; however, he was evaluated on-site and deemed fit for release.

Subsequent to his rescue, police confirmed that Hidalgo was taken into custody shortly thereafter.

Law enforcement officials reported that Hidalgo was suspected of attempting to commit a burglary at a nearby condominium complex.

According to the police report, he was alerted by a security guard while trying to steal items from the premises.

In his attempt to evade capture, Hidalgo allegedly fell into the ravine.

The police indicated that Hidalgo has a prior criminal record related to aggravated robbery, and they are investigating his possible links to several recent thefts in the area that match descriptions provided by victims.

After being taken into custody, Hidalgo was handed over to the judicial authorities for further processing.

The rescue operation and subsequent arrest highlight the prompt response of emergency services amid potential criminal activity in the vicinity.

The location of the incident straddles territories between La Uruca and Lagunilla de Heredia, expanding the jurisdictional scope for local law enforcement agencies involved in the ongoing investigation.
