Gamboa steps down from his role at Banco Nacional following his appointment as Secretary General of Partido Pueblo Soberano.
Francisco Gamboa, the former Minister of Economy, has confirmed his resignation from the position of Director of Institutional Relations at Banco Nacional (BN).
This decision follows his recent appointment as Secretary General of the Partido Pueblo Soberano (PPSO) on the previous Sunday.
Gamboa assumed his role at BN in January 2020 and had taken a leave of absence without pay on May 8, 2022, to serve as Minister of Economy, Industry, and Commerce.
In a statement to local media, Gamboa emphasized his commitment to prioritizing efforts aimed at improving the quality of life for citizens in
Costa Rica, citing a sense of patriotic duty as a motivating factor behind his decision.
His resignation comes in the wake of BN's announcement that it was considering referring his case to the Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones (TSE) to investigate potential involvement in political activities or violations of banking regulations.
Following the disclosure of Gamboa's resignation, Banco Nacional indicated that it would not provide further commentary regarding its former employee's situation.
As per the institution's confirmation, Gamboa's leave of absence was set to expire on October 27 of this year.
According to Article 29 of the Organic Law of the National Banking System (No. 1.644), members of bank boards, managers, and department heads are prohibited from participating in political and electoral activities, except for voting.
The Partido Pueblo Soberano is led by individuals aligned with President Rodrigo Chaves.
Gamboa will lead the party as Secretary General, alongside campaign financier Carlos Vásquez Landergreen, who serves as treasurer.
The political group was founded by Mayuli Ortega, a staff member in the presidential office.
During the PPSO assembly, Gamboa acknowledged the existence of several political parties supportive of President Chaves and expressed that the goal is for these groups to collaborate in preparation for the upcoming 2026 elections, hinting at the potential for political alliances.
Mayuli Ortega stated that Deputy Pilar Cisneros would have the authority to present the next presidential candidate for the party.
In the assembly held on June 1, the party resolved that its presidential candidate would recommend 14 candidates for the positions of deputy.
