Resignation of Costa Rica's Sports Minister Royner Mora Ruiz

Royner Mora Ruiz resigns from his position one day after the departure of former Culture Deputy Minister Vera Beatriz Vargas, marking the sixth high-profile exit from President Rodrigo Chaves' cabinet.
Royner Mora Ruiz has officially resigned from his position as Minister of Sport, as confirmed in a press conference by President Rodrigo Chaves.

The resignation was announced on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, just one day after the departure of former Deputy Minister of Culture, Vera Beatriz Vargas.

President Chaves stated that Mora's resignation was motivated by his desire to focus on 'new projects' aimed at improving the welfare of the Costa Rican people.

'He is another minister who leaves the cabinet, there are five departures that have attracted significant attention, and he is the sixth,' Chaves remarked.

Mora, 42 years old, assumed the role of Minister of Sport in May 2023, succeeding Mary Munive, who was appointed as Minister of Health.

With Mora's resignation, the total number of ministers who have stepped down during Chaves' administration rises to 18. Notably, on January 30, 2023, a day before the deadline for public officials aiming for presidential candidacy in the upcoming 2026 electoral race to resign, several high-profile officials left their posts.

This included the former Minister of the Presidency, Laura Fernández; the Ministers of Public Works, Mauricio Batalla; Education, Anna Katherina Müller; and Economy, Francisco Gamboa.

Additionally, Osvaldo Artavia, the former president of the Rural Development Institute (Inder), resigned, followed closely by his successor, Juan Ignacio Rodríguez Araya, who left amid media reports of his connections to a suspected drug leader involved in the Azteca case.
