Saprissa and Cartaginés Compete for Fourth Place in Costa Rican League

Saprissa and Cartaginés Compete for Fourth Place in Costa Rican League

As the Apertura 2024 approach its conclusion, both teams stand at a critical juncture, eyeing the last semifinal spot.
In the current state of the Costa Rican Apertura 2024 League, the Club Sport Cartaginés and Deportivo Saprissa are in fierce contention for the critical fourth place, projected as the pathway to the semi-finals of the tournament.

With six rounds remaining and a total of 18 points up for grabs, both teams find themselves tied at 25 points.

Cartaginés holds an advantage due to a superior goal difference of six, while Saprissa has a goal difference of two.

Notably, the two teams are set to face each other in an upcoming match, further intensifying the competition between them.

Trailing behind are Pérez Zeledón and Santos, currently with 19 points, followed by Liberia with 18 points, and Sporting FC with 17 points.

Although these teams maintain mathematical possibilities of advancing to the semifinals, their paths are considerably more challenging, requiring substantial improvements in their performance along with missteps from both Cartaginés and Saprissa.

Analyzing the prospects for Cartaginés and Saprissa, it appears that both teams have intricate schedules ahead.

However, Cartaginés may hold a theoretical advantage based on the positioning of their upcoming opponents.

Scheduled to play three home matches, Cartaginés will host Pérez Zeledón in the 17th round, Guanacasteca in the 19th, and Sporting FC in the season finale.

Additionally, they will face three away matches against San Carlos in the 18th round, Tibás in the 20th, and Municipal Liberia in the penultimate round.

Saprissa, on the other hand, has a more challenging lineup.

Their fixtures include three clashes with teams currently positioned higher in the league standings.

They will first host Santa Ana, who sits at the bottom of the overall table, in a match they are favored to win.

However, the subsequent away matches are expected to test their mettle: a visit to Lito Pérez stadium in Puntarenas in the 18th round and a classic encounter against Alajuelense at Morera Soto in the 19th round.

Following these matches, Saprissa will host Cartaginés in what could prove a decisive encounter, depending on the results of their earlier fixtures against Puntarenas and Alajuelense before their final games against Guanacasteca and Pérez Zeledón. The outcomes of these matches will play a crucial role in shaping the standings as the tournament nears its climax.
