The Spanish sports director's departure is part of significant changes within the club's management.
Sergio Gila will no longer serve as the Sports Director of Deportivo Saprissa,
Costa Rica's top football club.
The announcement was affirmatively reported by journalist Kevin Jiménez on his YouTube channel.
Gila, a Spanish national, arrived in
Costa Rica in 2021 to oversee the scouting department and to identify new talents for the club.
Gila's appointment as Sports Director came in 2023, following the departure of former Sports Director Ángel Catalina.
During Gila's tenure, some of his signings faced scrutiny, including players such as Yorkaeff Azofeifa, Rachid Chirino, Yoserth Hernández, and international players Sabin Merino and Nicolás Delgadillo.
Critics noted that the quality of the signings did not meet the expectations of the club’s supporters.
In a press conference in March 2025, Gila responded to inquiries regarding his satisfaction with the recent signings for the Clausura 2025 amidst the club’s poor performance.
He expressed hope for improvement and acknowledged the need for a more competitive squad capable of achieving better results.
The club has yet to formally announce Gila's exit or that of Luis Tornadijo, the head of scouting and youth divisions, who also reportedly will not continue with the team.
In other developments in Costa Rican football, Club Sport Cartaginés finalized an agreement with Johan Venegas, a veteran striker with an established career that includes stints at Alajuelense and Saprissa.
Venegas has a career total of 149 goals, and his signing is seen as a strategic move as Cartaginés prepares for the upcoming season.
Guadalupe FC also bolstered its lineup by announcing two new reinforcements, including 25-year-old forward Raúl López, who previously played for Fútbol Consultants, as well as Mexican goalkeeper Jair Peláez, who joins from Malacateco in Guatemala.
As Copa Centroamericana approaches, the Club Sport Herediano has confirmed its schedule for the tournament, which runs from July to December 2025. The club aims to advance beyond the semifinals, having been eliminated in the last two editions.
They are set to face strong regional competitors, including Municipal from Guatemala and Real España from Honduras.
Liga Deportiva Alajuelense is also preparing for the Copa Centroamericana, having secured a favorable group that includes Antigua GFC from Guatemala and Alianza FC from El Salvador.
Alajuelense seeks to defend its championship title in this competitive setting.
