Tragedy Strikes as Roof Collapses at Jet Set Nightclub in the Dominican Republic

Celebrated Merengue Singer Rubby Pérez Among 44 Victims in Catastrophic Incident
On April 8, 2025, a catastrophic roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, led to the deaths of at least 44 individuals and injured over 150 others.

The incident occurred during a performance by renowned merengue artist Rubby Pérez, who was also trapped beneath the debris but was later found singing, which possibly aided his rescue, although he subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

The late-night tragedy unfolded when the club's roof suddenly gave way, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.

Rescuers, comprising over 370 personnel, worked tirelessly to search for survivors amid the rubble.

The Director of the Center for Emergency Operations, Juan Manuel Méndez, stated that rescue efforts were focused on finding any remaining live victims, as voices could be heard calling for help from beneath the debris.

Among the deceased are several notable figures, including former Major League Baseball pitcher Octavio Dotel, whose death was confirmed shortly after the incident.

The nightclub, known for its live music events, was reportedly filled to its capacity of about 1,000 patrons at the time of the collapse.

Reports suggest that a sudden blackout may have contributed to the structural failure.

Zulinka Pérez, the daughter of Rubby Pérez, disclosed that her father had been singing while trapped, which may have led rescuers to him.

Although he was found alive and initially believed to be safe, he was unable to be extricated in time, resulting in widespread grief among fans and the community.

The tragedy has captured public attention and elicited expressions of sympathy from various sectors of society.

Families of victims have gathered near hospitals and the incident site, anxiously seeking information about their loved ones as rescue operations continued throughout the day.

President Luis Abinader visited the disaster zone and emphasized that the primary objective is to save lives.

The media coverage of the incident has been extensive, with authorities providing ongoing updates about the situation.

As the recovery efforts progress, the Dominican Republic is grappling with the aftermath of this devastating event, which has left a significant impact on the community and the nation at large.
