Miguel Herrera, head coach of
Costa Rica's national football team, has conveyed a strong message of intent ahead of the team's opening match in the 2025 Gold Cup.
Herrera highlighted the team's potential to win the regional tournament, a title that has eluded
Costa Rica in previous editions.
In a press conference held on Saturday, Herrera emphasized the talent and commitment of the squad, stating, "If the players answer that the commitment is to win it, it excites me.
We've blended a sensational group, combining experienced players with many younger talents."
Costa Rica's campaign in the Gold Cup is set to kick off on Sunday, June 15, with a match against Suriname at 9 PM local time.
In addition to Suriname,
Costa Rica will face the Dominican Republic and Mexico in the group stage.
The matchup against Mexico is particularly noteworthy, as Herrera, a Mexican national, will lead
Costa Rica against his home country.
He expressed optimism about the team's prospects, saying, "We have the opportunity to win.
The decision will depend on our performance on the pitch and our attitude.
I’ve discussed this with the players.
I truly believe we can compete against anyone."
Herrera's confidence stems from the visible progress and hard work of the players, stating, "What I observe gives me the conviction that we are capable.
If I didn’t see it, I wouldn't feel justified in claiming that we can win."
The 2025 Gold Cup, organized by the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), commenced on June 14. Matches will be primarily broadcasted on ESPN, with select games available via the Disney+ app.
