Tragic Traffic Collision in Santa Rosa de Pocosol Claims Lives of Pregnant Woman and Taxi Driver

A catastrophic accident on Route 35 underscores ongoing road safety issues in Costa Rica.
A serious traffic accident occurred early on June 14, 2025, in Santa Rosa de Pocosol, Costa Rica, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, including a pregnant woman, and leaving several others critically injured.

The incident took place around 5 a.m. on Calle Acapulco when a Hyundai Accent taxi collided head-on with a Suzuki Gran Vitara XL7.

The first report indicated that the collision resulted in three fatalities, including 55-year-old Asdrúbal Guillén Aguilar, who was driving the taxi.

He died at the scene.

Among the passengers in the taxi was a woman, approximately 20 years old and pregnant, who succumbed to her injuries at the Hospital de San Carlos later that day; she was reportedly 36 weeks into her pregnancy.

In total, the taxi transported five individuals, including a two-year-old girl.

The remaining passengers were transported to hospitals in critical condition.

Additionally, the driver of the Suzuki, identified as Méndez, also received medical attention, with another passenger unaccounted for.

Preliminary investigations by the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) suggested that the driver of the Suzuki may have invaded the lane of the taxi, though details remain under investigation.

Officials announced that the taxi was operating with an expired technical review and that the driver of the Suzuki did not possess a valid driver's license.

The Cruz Roja responded promptly, dispatching six ambulances to the scene of the collision, where they found three individuals trapped inside the taxi and four others outside the vehicles.

The medical personnel transported the injured to hospitals, including Hospital de San Carlos and the hospital in Los Chiles.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to clarify the circumstances leading to the crash and have reiterated ongoing concerns about road safety, emphasizing the importance of compliance with traffic regulations and proper vehicle documentation.
