Presidential communications office confirms Instagram profile hack amidst rising political cyber threats.
Rodrigo Chaves, the President of
Costa Rica, has confirmed that his personal Instagram account was hacked.
The official press department of the Casa Presidencial issued a statement acknowledging the breach, which emphasized that recent posts on the account were not authored by the president.
Following this incident, La Teja, a local news outlet, verified that the unauthorized posts had been removed from the platform.
This attack on President Chaves is indicative of a broader trend of cyber incidents targeting political figures.
Recently, Carlos Andrés Robles, a member of the Legislative Assembly from the Social Christian Unity Party (PUSC), reported that his WhatsApp account had been compromised and used to defraud individuals.
The Casa Presidencial has previously experienced similar security breaches.
On March 21, 2023, the official YouTube channel of the presidency was overtaken by hackers, who flooded it with videos related to cryptocurrencies and altered the channel's profile picture.
These incidents highlight ongoing vulnerabilities in the digital security landscape for political leaders and underscore the rising incidence of cyberattacks in political contexts worldwide.
