Cruz Roja Evacuates Elderly Residents from Flooded Care Home in Turrialba

Fifteen senior residents were evacuated from Virgen de los Ángeles in La Suiza following severe flooding caused by heavy rain.
The Cruz Roja (Red Cross) has reported the evacuation of 15 elderly adults from the Virgen de los Ángeles long-term care facility located in La Suiza, Turrialba, due to flooding that occurred on June 9. The organization received an emergency alert at 5 p.m. after heavy rain led to significant inundation in the area.

A response team consisting of 10 Cruz Roja volunteers and four ambulances was dispatched to the scene.

The elderly residents are being transported to a safe location, with initial plans to move them to a local church approximately 500 meters away from a nearby river.

Alejandro Picado, president of the Comisión Nacional de Emergencias (CNE), indicated that the weekend rains resulted in 150 reports of emergencies, predominantly from Siquirres, where approximately 100 homes were affected.

Additionally, damage was reported to the embankment of the Siquirres River and in the San Martín community, where the CNE is coordinating efforts for machinery to begin reconstruction of damaged structures.

Despite the reported damages, Picado confirmed that there was no necessity for the opening of temporary shelters.

Furthermore, incidents were reported in Matina, Pococí, Limón, and 11 other cantons across the country.

Given the forecasts for continued rainfall in the coming days, the CNE has elevated the alert status in the southern Caribbean region.

Consequently, a yellow alert has been declared nationwide.

The CNE has reminded the public that the rainy season is currently active, advising vigilance for changes in conditions that could lead to rising rivers or potential landslides in vulnerable areas.
