Disciplinary Action Taken Against Alajuelense Following Fan Misconduct

Disciplinary Action Taken Against Alajuelense Following Fan Misconduct

The Fedefútbol imposes a stadium ban and monetary fines on Liga Deportiva Alajuelense after incidents at the final match against Saprissa.
Liga Deportiva Alajuelense has received a significant disciplinary sanction from the Disciplinary Tribunal of the Costa Rican Football Federation (Fedefútbol) following the return leg of the final match of the second phase against Saprissa.

The tribunal announced a three-match stadium ban and a total monetary fine of ₡1,687,500 colones due to various infractions related to spectator behavior.

The punishment includes two home matches without spectators and a fine of ₡1,125,000 for the sixth infraction regarding the introduction of prohibited items, specifically fireworks, into the stadium.

Additionally, a fine of ₡562,500 and a one-match stadium ban were imposed due to the second incident of dangerous object throwing within the tournament, despite no injuries reported.

As a result of this ruling, Alajuelense is required to find an alternative venue for their upcoming match against Herediano, likely to take place at the Estadio Nacional.

Soon after the announcement, it was confirmed that Alajuelense had appealed the decision, seeking a review of the grounds for the stadium ban.

The tribunal stated that it will consider the appeal and provide feedback as promptly as possible.

This situation is reminiscent of Alajuelense's previous involvement in an earlier tournament where they also began their matches at the Estadio Nacional due to a six-match ban following incidents during the previous final against Herediano.

In parallel developments, the fallout from Saprissa's elimination from the Clausura 2025 tournament has prompted reactions from various figures within the football community.

Notably, Rolando Fonseca, a former player and current commentator, has openly criticized the leadership of Saprissa, attributing the team's struggles to decisions made by management.

He called for accountability regarding the investments made in the team, suggesting that the responsibility lies higher up the chain than with head coach Paulo César Wanchope.

Victories in previous matches did not shield Saprissa from criticism after their recent elimination, leading to discussions about significant changes within the club as it faces an entire year without trophies.

Gustavo Chinchilla, general manager of Saprissa, acknowledged the need for a thorough assessment of the club’s performance and indicated that operational changes are on the horizon, especially concerning player contracts.

Under scrutiny are several players who have underperformed or have been on loan, including Nicolás Delgadillo and Sabin Merino, whose exits from the club are now being considered.

Kendall Waston, who has played both defense and forward for Saprissa during this season, reflected on the team's shortcomings, emphasizing their failure to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

Following the playoff defeat, he acknowledged the collective responsibility within the team and encouraged a focus on future objectives rather than dwelling on past mistakes.

Saprissa's management now faces the pressing task of determining player retention and potential reinforcements ahead of the next season.
