Google announced on Saturday its intention to appeal a recent antitrust ruling that found the company guilty of engaging in illegal practices to establish and maintain its monopoly in online searches.

This declaration followed the government's recommendation on Friday for the divestiture of Google's web browser, Chrome.

In a statement posted on social media, Google, based in California, declared, "We will await the court's opinion.

We firmly believe that its initial decision was erroneous, and we are preparing to appeal in due time."

The ruling, delivered by U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta in the summer of 2024, deemed that Google had violated antitrust laws.

The U.S. Department of Justice has asserted that penalties could significantly alter the digital landscape, including the forced sale of Chrome and an end to exclusive agreements with smartphone manufacturers that designate Google Search as the default.

Additionally, the Department is calling for Google to share the data it utilizes for generating search results.

Google’s statement highlighted concerns over this proposal, asserting, "the government, not the court, reserves the right to decide who can access Google's user data."

The government argues that Google is facing unprecedented competition from generative artificial intelligence models, such as ChatGPT, which can access the internet and respond to user queries without necessitating a search engine.

Google responded by indicating that discussions focused heavily on the purported benefits for well-funded competitors, particularly Microsoft’s Bing, while neglecting the actual benefits these measures would provide to consumers.

In contrast, Google has proposed more limited measures, which would allow phone manufacturers to pre-install its Google Play app store but exclude Chrome and its search engine.

The court hearing held on Friday concluded the trial phase and now determines the sentencing specifics for Google.
