Intense precipitation expected in various regions as saturated soils raise flood concerns.
Tropical Wave N.° 4, which has already caused significant rainfall over the weekend, is set to continue its progression across
Costa Rica into the afternoon of Sunday.
The National Meteorological Institute (IMN) forecasts intense rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in multiple regions of the country, specifically the Northern Pacific, Central Pacific, Northern Zone, and the mountains of the Northern Caribbean, particularly later in the afternoon and into the evening hours.
The IMN has reported that due to ongoing heavy rains, soil saturation levels in the Southern Pacific, Garabito, and the Sarapiquí River basin have increased, heightening the risk of flooding.
This situation is also evident in the plains of the Nicoya Peninsula, the Caribbean, and Braulio Carrillo National Park, where soil saturation levels are categorized as moderate.
As a precautionary measure, the IMN has advised residents to take necessary precautions to mitigate potential drainage system overflow in flood-prone areas.
Individuals are also urged to seek shelter during thunderstorms, as wind gusts could reach up to 80 km/h in isolated instances, potentially resulting in downed branches and power lines.
The IMN estimates rainfall accumulations of between 30 to 60 mm over three to six-hour periods in the mentioned at-risk regions.
In the Southern Pacific, Central Valley, and Southern Caribbean mountains, rainfall accumulations are expected to be in the range of 20 to 50 mm during comparable time frames.
Additionally, these areas may experience fog banks overnight.
The tropical wave is anticipated to exit the national territory later in the evening on Sunday.
