Israel Launches Major Offensive Against Iran Amid Escalating Tensions

Israel conducts unprecedented military strikes on Iranian facilities, prompting significant Iranian missile responses.
On June 13, 2025, Israel initiated a series of extensive military strikes on Iranian military and nuclear facilities, marking one of the most significant military operations in the region’s history.

The Israeli army mobilized approximately 200 aircraft, targeting around 100 locations across Iran, predominantly the Natanz uranium enrichment plant, known for its critical role in Iran's nuclear program.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the operation, termed 'Ascendant Lion', would extend over several days.

The Iranian leadership, led by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, accused Israel of declaring war and initiated a response by launching dozens of ballistic missiles towards Israel, resulting in civilian injuries.

The Israeli military reported ongoing assaults against Iranian targets throughout the day.

During the initial assault, explosions were reported in various areas of Tehran, including military quarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and significant civilian structures sustained damage.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed damage to the Natanz facility but noted that radiation levels remained stable, with no immediate risk of nuclear contamination.

Casualty reports indicated the deaths of high-ranking military officials, including the head of the Revolutionary Guard, Hossein Salami, and the chief of staff, Mohammad Baqeri.

Among the fatalities were six nuclear scientists, and approximately 50 civilians, including women and children, were reported injured.

In the wake of the Israeli attacks, air raid sirens sounded across Israel, signaling an imminent threat.

The Iranian military claimed to have targeted military bases within Israel, asserting their commitment to retaliate against the strikes.

Netanyahu declared a state of emergency across the country and ordered the closure of Israeli airspace, as the military intercepted various drones launched from Iran.

He outlined expectations of multiple waves of Iranian attacks on Israeli territory.

The United States, under President Donald Trump, acknowledged awareness of the Israeli strikes, urging Iran to conclude negotiations regarding its nuclear program promptly.

Trump warned Iranian officials that any future U.S. counteractions would be more intense if they retaliated against Israeli interests.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that Washington played no role in the Israeli offensive.

The international community expressed concern over the escalating conflict.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, alongside EU and NATO officials, called for restraint and de-escalation.

Russia and China voiced strong opposition to Israel's actions, with Moscow condemning the strikes as provocations.

As geopolitical tensions rise, the Iranian government has shut down its airspace in response to the conflict.

The recent escalation has significantly impacted global oil markets, with crude prices experiencing sharp increases due to concerns over potential supply disruptions from the Middle East.

The price of North Sea Brent crude surged by over 12% as traders reacted to the heightened military tensions.

Travel advisories from airlines including Emirates and Qatar Airways noted cancellations of flights to Iran and Iraq due to safety concerns.

The situation on the ground remains volatile, with both nations preparing for further military engagements amidst rising global unease.
