National Emergency Commission Reports 35 Flood Incidents and Maintains Yellow Alert Nationwide

Severe weather conditions have led to significant flooding incidents across multiple regions, prompting evacuations and ongoing assessments.
The National Emergency Commission (CNE) has reported a total of 35 flood-related incidents across various regions of the country as of Monday.

The most significant events occurred in La Suiza de Turrialba, where rainfall was notably intense, leading to the collapse of the sewage system.

Additionally, there were reports of overflowing streams and the flooding of the Virgen de Los Ángeles nursing home, situated 500 meters from the swollen Tuis River due to the heavy rains.

Fifteen elderly residents from this care facility were evacuated on Monday evening to a shelter located at the community's Civic Center, where they have remained since.

Alejandro Picado, president of the CNE, stated that supplies have been mobilized for the elderly residents and that health personnel conducted assessments of the impacted individuals.

On Tuesday, authorities plan to conduct damage evaluations at the nursing home and determine if safe conditions exist for the return of the elderly residents.

Picado also reported that obstructions in the sewage system were detected in various sectors including Río Claro in Golfito, Abrojo in Corredores, Ollón in Pérez Zeledón, Palmar in Osa, and La Casona in Coto Brus.

Flooding was also reported on public roads in these areas.

Forecasts from the National Meteorological Institute (IMN) indicate that rainfall is expected to continue across the Pacific region, particularly in the evening, with heavy showers anticipated for the remainder of the week.

The intensity of the rainfall may be influenced by the development of a potential low-pressure system associated with a large storm cloud formation known as the intertropical convergence zone, located in the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Currently, soil saturation levels are reported to be between 85% and 95% in regions including Osa, the Talamanca mountains, Valle del General, Central Pacific, Nicoya Peninsula, the Tempisque area, northern regions, and both eastern and western extremes of the Central Valley, increasing vulnerability to further incidents.

Due to the saturated soils resulting from the ongoing rainfall, the CNE has maintained a yellow alert across the country, indicating that local committees should remain active and monitor high-risk areas in light of the strong precipitation forecasted for the coming days.
