Santos de Guápiles Player Describes Financial Struggles Amid Club Controversy
Player reveals unpaid salaries and uncertainty following the revocation of the club's license by Fedefútbol.
A player from Santos de Guápiles has shared the difficult circumstances faced by the team after the club's license was revoked, leading to severe financial distress.
The player, who requested anonymity, indicated that the squad has not received payment for a month and a half, leaving players in a state of uncertainty regarding their future with the team.
On May 5, 2025, the Fedefútbol's Licensing Committee revoked the club's license, citing unreported administrative changes as the reason for suspending the team's permission to compete in the Primera División. Following the announcement, the players ceased training, uncertain of their standing as a result of the legal issues affecting the club.
"Never before have we faced such a difficult situation at the club, and we stopped training the day the news broke about the license revocation.
We were told we were going on vacation, with only a few matches left in the regular season, and that the legal department would handle the matter, which is not our concern," the player stated.
He also reported receiving only half of the salary due for May and no payment for June.
"We are not training; there is a great deal of uncertainty because we do not know what will happen next.
The management has been unresponsive.
I learned about the situation from the media, and neither the president nor the manager has addressed us directly."
The player expressed frustration over the management’s lack of professionalism during this tumultuous period.
He indicated that over twenty players are similarly affected, with many families experiencing financial hardships due to the delay in salaries.
"I reach out for information, but no one answers.
Many families depend on the players' salaries, and personally, I am living off my savings, but that is not sustainable, and everyone has responsibilities."
Training has been interrupted, and players are reportedly concerned about their physical fitness and the uncertainty of their return to the team or the need to seek other clubs.
"We are alone in this; we have no backing from the club," the player added.
In response to the ongoing financial and administrative turmoil, the players turned to Asojupro, a player union, seeking legal support.
"We made a significant effort last semester to avoid relegation, earning the right to remain in the top division.
We are frustrated because we have not received any communication regarding the legal process, nor have we returned to the stadium."
Santos de Guápiles is also under investigation for alleged match-fixing connected to a game played against Guanacasteca, where they won 4-1 in October 2024. The player indicated a lack of knowledge regarding any corruption-related offers involving the club, but mentioned awareness of administrative changes only coming to light last year.
Ronny Cortés, the president of Santos, acknowledged that recent payments had been made and confirmed that efforts are ongoing to secure the necessary resources to meet club obligations.
"Not everything can be perfect; we currently hold no license.
Six players have requested contract terminations, and we found the funds to settle those accounts.
If any player does not wish to remain with the club, we are willing to release them, but there are players who wish to create unrest," he noted.
Additionally, Cortés stated that players have been granted vacations, and portions of coaching staff salaries have also been addressed.
He mentioned plans for an extraordinary assembly where the management hopes to clarify their position and attain support to continue competing in the Primera División. "We trust in the support of the directors; I have spoken with several, and they have indicated they stand with us in principle, but we await further developments."
