Water Rationing in Moravia, Goicoechea, and Tibás Due to Pump Failure

Thousands affected as main aqueduct motor failure leads to service suspension in Costa Rica's Greater Metropolitan Area.
Residents of Moravia, Goicoechea, and Tibás are experiencing water rationing as a result of a failure in the main motor of the Guadalupe aqueduct, which is situated at a reported depth of 300 meters.

This incident, confirmed by the Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (AyA), is expected to cause service interruptions for at least three days, with repair operations classified as 'high complexity.' The AyA issued an official statement indicating that the repairs could extend through to June 11.

Amid skepticism regarding the reported depth of the motor, which some users have questioned on social media, the organization has emphasized that systems in the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) are interconnected.

This will allow for the transfer of water from other regions to mitigate the impact on affected users.

The AyA has been actively working on a strategy to manage the water distribution while the repairs are taking place.

Residents in the district of San Vicente de Moravia were informed that their service would be suspended from Sunday afternoon, with a gradual restoration expected throughout the night.

The AyA plans to release a schedule detailing the rationing times for the affected sectors.

They have urged residents to store only the necessary amount of water for basic needs to facilitate a fair distribution and minimize disruptions.

Despite this appeal for understanding, many residents have expressed frustration over the planning and quality of service.

Complaints have included issues regarding elevated water bills and inadequate response times to maintenance problems.

Some residents have pointed out ongoing issues, such as unaddressed leaks reported to the company for several days.

The AyA has stated that it will continue to provide updates through its official channels and on its website.

Historical context reveals that the Guadalupe plant has previously faced challenges, including a contamination incident in early 2022, where water supplied to residents was found to contain xylene, a harmful hydrocarbon.

As repair efforts continue, the organization reassures that it will work to address the concerns of affected users and restore water service as promptly as possible.
