Gerson Torres Strives for Impact at Deportivo Saprissa Amid VAR Controversy

The player reflects on his disallowed goal against Liberia and his aspirations to contribute more to the team.
Gerson Torres, a prominent player for Deportivo Saprissa, expressed his desire to score goals and create memorable moments for fans.

His aspirations were put to the test during a match against Liberia on Sunday, where he scored what he believed to be a significant goal in the 55th minute.

After eluding goalkeeper Antonny Monreal, Torres celebrated his achievement, only to have the goal disqualified following a VAR review initiated by referee Keylor Herrera.

The decision stemmed from a foul committed by teammate Ariel Rodríguez in the buildup to the goal.

Torres conveyed his disappointment regarding the disallowed goal, particularly given the effort he had invested in his recovery from injury and training.

He shared, "Since my injury, I have been working hard to be fit and to score with Saprissa.

I marked the goal as I had envisioned, and it was tough to see it annulled.

I practiced that goal a lot during training, so it was difficult, but I have to keep moving forward, and it will happen soon."

The player highlighted his commitment to becoming a more prolific scorer since joining Saprissa.

Despite the setback, he affirmed his intent to continue to work hard.

"It was a nice goal; it got annulled, but I kept trying, and I was doing things well.

Such events happen in every game; some get called, and others do not, and it's hard to understand,” Torres added.

Torres explained that he has been receiving more playing time, feeling physically prepared and confident, thanks to the support from his teammates, physiotherapists, and trainers at the club.

He remarked on the importance of this support in his daily performance.

The player mentioned that head coach Paulo César Wanchope has provided him specific guidance, noting, "He told me that I am technically good but need to make more off-the-ball runs.

I have been trying to grasp their ideas and have been doing well.

I often don’t receive the ball at my feet, as I am also moving into space."

In the match against Liberia, which ended in a 1-1 draw, Torres acknowledged that the opposing team surprised them with an early goal scored by Daniel Colindres.

"We tried on the sides, in the middle; we had a goal disallowed.

We did everything, and the team gave its all.

Paulo wants high intensity and good play, and I think the team has done that.

In the end, we couldn’t win, which was our objective, but I feel we are on the right track,” Torres stated.

Looking ahead, Torres believes that the forthcoming break in the league due to international commitments for the national team will allow them the opportunity to refine the strategies emphasized by Wanchope.
