A clinical trial is currently being conducted in the United States to assess a drug that could potentially prolong the lifespan of dogs.

This study, referred to as the STAY trial, is organized by Loyal, an animal health company based in San Francisco.

The double-blind, placebo-controlled trial includes at least one thousand senior dogs, with the company planning to seek approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) based on the results.

This trial follows promising preclinical and pilot studies.

As stated by Alex Robb, medical director of Goodheart Animal Health Center in Colorado, the dogs participating in the trial will receive daily doses of the drug over a four-year timeframe, along with regular clinical evaluations.

Researchers will assess whether the drug significantly affects longevity at the conclusion of the study.

To be eligible for participation, dogs must be at least ten years old and weigh a minimum of fourteen pounds.

Owners are required to transfer their pet's primary care to a participating study clinic and agree to multiple veterinary check-ups throughout the four-year period.

The first year will necessitate six visits, with two visits required each year thereafter.

The study aims to explore factors that contribute to aging in dogs, such as their elevated metabolic rate in comparison to humans.

While advancements in veterinary medicine have improved healthcare for dogs, their overall lifespan has not seen an increase on par with that of humans.

Loyal intends to utilize the data gathered to pursue conditional FDA approval for the drug by the end of the year.

Recruitment for the trial is currently active at various clinics nationwide.
