Paulo Wanchope Reflects on Deportivo Saprissa's Victory Against Herediano

Saprissa's coach acknowledges the need for improvement despite the team's win and addresses player dynamics and strategy.
Paulo César Wanchope, head coach of Deportivo Saprissa, expressed satisfaction following his team's 1-0 victory over Club Sport Herediano, while also recognizing the potential for further improvement.

Wanchope emphasized that both the coaching staff and players acknowledge the need to elevate their performance levels.

During the post-match analysis, Wanchope noted that Herediano aggressively pressed in the second half, managing to dominate possession at times, while also highlighting the caliber of their opponents, being the reigning champions.

Regarding the game, Wanchope stated, "It was a very good match, and we are all aware, coaching staff and players alike, that we can give more.

Particularly in the second half, we lacked the consistency we had been showing.

Our ball retention was better in the first half."

The coach also spoke about the status of midfielder David Guzmán, who left the match due to knee pain.

"We need to wait for the examinations on his knee because he is in considerable pain.

Hopefully, it is not something serious," he mentioned.

As for player substitutions, Wanchope addressed a brief incident involving Marvin Loria, who hesitated to leave the field.

He clarified, "It wasn't a discussion; it is a normal occurrence.

As a coach, I prefer not to make a substitution too quickly.

We gave him the necessary time as we felt he could continue, but as the minutes passed, we saw he wasn't at 100%.

He had a discomfort and needs to be evaluated."

Reflecting on the intensity of the match against a formidable opponent, Wanchope expressed optimism.

"I experienced the game with a lot of intensity and positivity because things have been going well.

We understand how it is.

In football, it is not always the dominant team that wins.

However, we must remain diligent in the details."

Discussing player assortment, he added, "I have a broad squad and stated when I arrived that I have the right to see and shuffle pieces each match, always searching for the best eleven.

It is not easy to tell a player they are not on the list or to inform someone who played the previous match that they will not be considered this time.

But that is the responsibility of a coach, always striving for the best for the team."

Looking ahead to the conclusion of the championship, Wanchope acknowledged the competitiveness of the league.

"The closing is beneficial for Costa Rican football.

Until the last match, there will be intense competition for the top spot, for qualification, and to determine relegation.

This competitiveness is essential for our youth to learn how to handle pressure and grow.

All players competed at their limits, and that is what we want from them: to enjoy the competition."

Wanchope also touched on offensive strategies, noting the inconsistency in scoring.

"Look at football; against Santos, we had 23 shots and failed to score, whereas now we had three shots and scored one.

We must be effective and know how to arrive at the goal.

Ideally, I would have liked to dominate the match for 90 minutes and have 23 goal attempts as in the previous game, but we were up against the champions, a team with hierarchy, and that must be respected.

Fortunately, we emerged with three points."
