Saprissa Legend Benjamín Mayorga Defends David Guzmán Amid Fan Backlash

Mayorga speaks out against criticism directed at Guzmán, asserting that team struggles are a collective issue.
Benjamín 'Mincho' Mayorga, a prominent figure from Deportivo Saprissa's celebrated 1990s era, has publicly defended midfielder David Guzmán amid growing discontent from fans.

Recently, sections of the Saprissa supporter base have expressed their frustration through boos and jeers directed at Guzmán during matches, particularly evident in a recent fixture where Saprissa drew 1-1 against Liberia.

Mayorga contended that the criticism directed at Guzmán is misplace, emphasizing that the issues faced by the team are systemic rather than the fault of any individual player.

'If fans are going to boo someone, they should boo everyone.

When Saprissa loses, we all lose; when they win, we all win,' he stated.

Mayorga’s comments come as a response to the heightened scrutiny of Guzmán, who he labels one of the club's most legendary players.

Alongside Guzmán, other players such as Eduardo Anderson and Jefri Valverde have also faced fan criticism, with Guzmán seemingly bearing the brunt of discontent.

Mayorga argued that fans are mistaken in their assessment of the player, describing him as having the identity and commitment to Saprissa deeply ingrained in his essence.

He noted, 'It is unfortunate that some fans choose to unleash their frustrations on an individual instead of recognizing it as a broader issue.'

In an impassioned defense of Guzmán, who has contributed significantly to the club's historical successes, Mayorga questioned why the fans target players instead of the club's management, suggesting accountability should extend to those responsible for team recruitment and coaching decisions.

He pointed out, 'David did not hire the players, nor did he bring in the coaches.

That responsibility lies with the management and sporting director.'

These events unfold against the backdrop of increasing tensions within the Saprissa fan community, where expectations remain high.

Fans have consistently shown their devotion to the team, demanding performance commensurate with the club's storied past and stature in Costa Rican football.
