Vehicular Passage Opens Over Tunnel in Circunvalación Norte at Calle Blancos
Newly activated streets improve connectivity in Goicoechea following completion of infrastructure project.
On March 17, vehicular passage was officially opened on the streets constructed over the tunnel of the fifth phase of Circunvalación Norte in the Calle Blancos area of Goicoechea.
The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) announced the activation of marginal streets that connect with the roundabout, which was inaugurated in October of the previous year, and with the lower lanes underneath the viaduct.
These newly opened streets enhance accessibility for surrounding communities situated at the level previously occupied by the road before the project's commencement.
The main trunk road of the final phase of Circunvalación Norte was fully opened on October 4, completing the peripheral ring that encircles San José.
This last phase connects Route 32 with the Bicentennial roundabout in Guadalupe and includes 600 meters of elevated road comprising four lanes, as well as 900 meters divided into a 450-meter tunnel and another 450 meters of an overpass at the Calle Blancos intersection, near the Femsa factory.
Each segment features corresponding marginal roads, and a roundabout has replaced the Calle Blancos intersection.
The construction of Circunvalación Norte commenced in its initial sections in 2017. The fifth phase, which was executed through an addendum, began in August 2021. The development of this phase has been financed through a loan from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) amounting to $59.9 million.
