CEO of Primark Resigns Amid Investigation into Inappropriate Conduct

Paul Marchant steps down following an external investigation into allegations of misconduct in a social setting.
Paul Marchant, the Chief Executive Officer of Primark, a low-cost clothing retailer based in Ireland, has resigned following the initiation of an investigation into allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards a woman.

The announcement was made on Monday by the parent company of Primark, Associated British Foods (ABF).

The investigation, which is being conducted by external lawyers, was prompted by a complaint made by an individual regarding Marchant's conduct in a social environment.

ABF's statement described the investigation as a response to these allegations without disclosing specific details about the incident.

ABF acknowledged its role in the matter, stating that it cooperated with the investigation, recognized a lapse in judgment, and accepted that Marchant's actions did not meet the expected standards of behaviour.

In the statement, it was noted that Marchant has apologized to the individual involved, as well as to the ABF board, his colleagues at Primark, and others connected to the company.

The company emphasized its commitment to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive working environment, where all employees and third parties are treated with dignity and respect.

ABF also expressed its support for the individual who raised the concerns regarding Marchant's conduct.

Paul Marchant took the helm of Primark in 2009, succeeding the company's founder, Arthur Ryan, who established the brand in 1969 under the name Penneys.

Eoin Tonge, the Chief Financial Officer of ABF, has been appointed as interim CEO following Marchant's departure.

This leadership change occurs at a challenging time for Primark, as the retailer is reportedly experiencing a decline in foot traffic at its stores in the United Kingdom.

Industry analyst Susannah Streeter indicated that the company faces significant challenges, while Russ Mould of AJ Bell suggested that Marchant's resignation may only cause a temporary disruption, citing that Primark is a well-organized operation.

Primark operates in 17 countries and employs approximately 80,000 people.

The chain has a total of 453 stores, offering not only clothing and accessories but also home goods, alongside various services including cafés and barbershops.
