Violence in Cartago: Two Disturbing Homicides Under Investigation

Authorities are investigating a severe stabbing incident and a gruesome homicide linked to a party invitation.
On March 31, 2025, at approximately 10:30 p.m., a 37-year-old man was critically injured in a stabbing incident in La Lima de San Nicolás, Cartago.

According to the Cruz Roja, paramedics arrived to find the man with multiple stab wounds to the neck and chest.

He was subsequently transported in critical condition to Max Peralta Hospital in Cartago.

Local authorities have yet to provide detailed information regarding the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Separately, a horrific homicide case has emerged in Cóbano, where Adinir Gabriel Méndez Castro, 32, was reportedly lured to a gathering under false pretenses before being killed.

Preliminary investigations suggest that on March 28, 2025, Méndez Castro was taken to a residence in the La Mencha neighborhood, where he was assaulted.

His body was discovered on March 29, at around 5 a.m., in the Cóbano River, concealed in a plastic bag, exhibiting signs of severe violence including multiple stab wounds and burns.

The primary suspect is a 21-year-old woman identified as Alfaro, along with her boyfriend, a 31-year-old man named Zapata.

Authorities also arrested two additional suspects, 38-year-old Ramírez and 44-year-old Castro, during a raid in the La Mencha area on April 1. The investigation is ongoing, with officials working to clarify the motives behind the crime.

In the past three months, 232 homicides have been reported, indicating a persistent level of violence in the region similar to the statistics from the previous year.

The recent cases have sparked significant concern among residents in Cóbano, who express alarm at the increasing brutality displayed in these incidents.

Moreover, a case from 2019 has concluded with a 12-year prison sentence for Ureña Fernández, also known as Chucky, who was convicted of homicide after fatally stabbing another man, Jonathan Fernández Chavarría, during an altercation.

The victim was pursued and assaulted following a dispute at a local bar, leading to his death at a basketball court.
